Well, Vertanno is back with his tactical advice and this time it's for FM08! His first piece for the tactical side of FM08 has a look at how to fully utilize tackling and time wasting to your advantage. Definately worth a read!

Tackling + Time Wasting – not as simple as you thought buddy

These two tactical instructions are not as simple as you may have thought and they both have great importance to your teams’ success.

Tackling

Many people assume that the tackling slider (easy/normal/hard), defines how hard a player is going to dive into too tackles. You’re all naïve fuckers! But fear not, I have created a theory that will simplify tackling for the rest of time. Or until SI come up with a better match engine.

Easy = the player will only attempt a challenge if there is ≥ 99.9% success rate.

Normal = the player will only attempt a challenge if there is ≥ 66.6% success rate.

Hard = Luck if you can’t figure this one out…

…joke

Hard = the player will only avoid the tackle when the success rate is ≤ 33.3%.

So when should my team should be tackling easy, normal and hard?

Easy – works best with the attacking frameworks (excluding your defenders and dmc). Why? Attacking players usually have shit tackling/defensive attributes, so you avoid bookings and opposition free-kicks.

Normal – always keep centre backs, the goalkeeper and even full-backs when playing narrow on this so you avoid conceding lots of penalties. Normal is a good setting to have tackling on, letting your team contest all around he pitch with out getting to many bookings and opposition free-kicks.

Hard – Someone with 20 in tackling and anticipation would be a good candidate. Hard tackling around the board is most effective when play, slow tempo teams who dwell on the ball constantly; so you can retain the ball. Hard tackling set on an opposition with low bravery and composure can cause them to panic and get your team the ball back.

Time Wasting

This is probably more complicated than tackling, because it is not set into three segments on the slider, but set into twenty segments. When we think of time wasting, we automatically think of that twat who runs to the corner flag, and winds down the clock, to ensure a victory. And if you set the time wasting slider to 20, they will probably do that!

But obviously, there’s much more to time wasting, or I wouldn’t be writing this article.

So what happens if I set the time wasting slider to 1? What does the team to do then? They don’t waste time, that’s for sure. No I am serious, as soon as they get the ball; they get rid of the ball.

So what happens if I set the time wasting slider to 10? Does the team time waste one minute then get rid of the ball the next? No. The team won’t rush things, nor will they spend a lot of time on the ball.

To summarise, time wasting is a slider used to decide how long your players will spend on the ball before making a pass/shot/cross. Too much time wasting and your players will take too long on the ball and miss good opportunities to pass/shoot/cross. Not enough time wasting and your players will rush things, and there final pass/shot/cross may not be as good as it could be.

Much time wasting works best with a slow tempo, short passing game. !Slow build up!

Rarely time wasting works best with a fast tempo, direct/long passing game. !Fast Attack!

Mixed time wasting works best with normal tempo, mixed passing game. !Bit of both!

Good luck with your time wasting and tackling settings! n o t
