It is not a secret that Football Manager has evolved past the point where a few simple tricks sufficed for anyone to dominate. No killer diablo tactics work in FM2007 anymore, and you will definitely have to adjust your team's tactics to your actual squad strengths and weaknesses. Keeping this in mind, we will attempt to find which are the most probable tactics to work in the world of FM
Test setup: For this test, we selected a mid-table Premiership team, Bolton. We created a new game as managers of Bolton, and saved the game on Day 1. This save game will be used as a basis for all future tests. Bolton is a good choice, because it has a relatively balanced squad and a decent assistant manager, who will take control of our team throughout the season.
With our Save Game loaded, we opt for a 10-month-holiday, returning in late May. We set the assistant manager to use our selected formation and not to buy or sell players (we want the squad to be the same for all test cases).
Formations to test: We will be testing all basic formations with typical instructions (4-4-2, 4-4-2 att., various 3-5-2, 3-4-3 etc). We will also test certain formations suggested by our users. If you would like to have your own formation considered for inclusion in the test, please email us with the tactic file, a screenshot and any additional comments (achievements etc) at

{mospagebreak} Today we will be starting with our first tactics test. In this one, instead of setting specific instructions to the assistant manager, we asked him to use his own preferred formation, so as to get an idea of what the club's position would be without our intervention.
Sample Image As predicted before the game, Bolton ended up somewhere around the middle of the table. 11th, having scored 71 and conceded 80. Nicolas Anelka easily dominated all categories.
