As you must have noticed, in FM2006 there is a set of descriptions to determine how suited is a player to each position:
Natural
Accomplished
Competent
Un-convincing
Awkward
Ineffectual As you must have noticed, in FM2006 there is a set of descriptions to determine how suited is a player to each position:

By retraining a player you can change the position he originally used to play at and have him move up that list towards accomplishment. You can find this option in the training section of a player's profile.

You should always keep in mind that a younger player is more likely to accept position training. Also, iuf you do decide to retrain a player, try to have his mew position match his skills. Consider retraining a pacey defender to be a winger, you might; but it's quite unlikely that a tough central defender will ever make a competent attacking midfielder, nor that he will be happy if you press him to do so.

Also try to give him some games in his new position. This will speed up and perfect his developpement.

Keep in mind that you player will never become a natural. The furthest scale to which he can climb in his new position is accomplished
